New Balance

The history of the company began in 1906 when William J. Riley founded New Balance Athletic Shoe, Inc. in Boston Massachusetts. But why New Balance? A 33-year-old Englishman, Riley indeed had quite amusing thoughts. After having dealt with the foot problems of many people, he as a shoemaker aimed to develop innovative soles to increase the wearing comfort. He had the dazzling idea when he watched his chickens in the garden: fascinated by the feet of the chicken and how they kept their balance, he designed soles with three support points. Hence, he was able to create custom-made arch supports for people with foot problems and to reduce pain. Everybody, be it man or woman, should make a find thanks to the different widths offered.

In 1933, Arthur Hall became the partner of Riley to support the New Balance team. After they successfully mastered the economic depression of the 1930s, the company relocated to Cambridge, Massachusetts. In the 1940s, Riley and Hall produced shoes individually adapted to sports like basketball, tennis and boxing. Dan McBride competed at the Reddish Road Race with the first hand-crafted spikes made of black Kangaroo leather with a crepe sole. Until 1953, the company was run by Arthur Hall; it was then sold to Hall’s daughter and her husband.
Until 1961, the company continued to produce orthopaedic insoles but then the company reached one of the milestones in the company’s history: the “Trackster” – a running shoe with a grooved sole. In order to ensure the adaption to differently shaped feet, the company produced this shoe in several widths. At that time 6 employees produced 30 shoes a day. After the M320 had passed the Runner’s World test as the best running shoe in 1976, the company was swift to react so as to get started on a global scale and to establish a worldwide empire in this sector. In 2006 the company celebrated its centennial and has been present at five continents with more than 2,800 employees. So come and let yourself be convinced by the colourful sneakers and the high comfort they offer.
